Abigail: Week 3
Did you know that Abigail is the only woman in the Bible who is described as both intelligent and beautiful? It’s this intelligence that guides her to resolve the conflict between David and Nabal in 1 Samuel 25, thus saving her entire household. So how did she do it?
Acknowledge the conflict: Abigail’s courteous apology first acknowledges the situation of how Nabal’s harsh words insulted the future king publicly, how she wasn’t there to witness it, but that she takes the blame for the lack of hospitality.
Provide an offering: Abigail quickly sent food ahead of her arrival, enough for David and his 600 men. This was a way to make an offering for Nabal’s sin and to cleverly align herself to the future king.
A gentle answer turns away wrath: Abigail’s respectful apology, wise counsel, and humble demeanor disarm David and cause him to change his mind. “May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed…Go home in peace. I have heard your words and granted your request” (1 Sam. 25:33, 35).
Consider following Abigail’s example as you overcome conflicts in your own life and pray for the Spirit to give you gentle words that turn away wrath (Prov. 15:1).
